I am doing my PhD in Anthropology, exploring diversity and inclusion in digital capitalism through financial technology. More broadly, I am interested in entanglements between the economy and our everyday lives, digital communities, transnational identities, food, and queer studies.
My interest in TikTok came through one of my previous projects, where I researched the formation of transnational identity through engagement in online communities, which got me curious. This ended in me writing about TikTok’s #I'mComingOut and the way companies utilize social media for queerbaiting and, ultimately, marketing purposes, which lies at the intersection of the (digital) economy with gender, sexuality, and social change.
When I learned about the TikTok collective, I was eager to join, since I find the world of TikTok fascinating. How people build and use online communities for information, sense of belonging and emotional support is something that also plays a role in my work about the crypto bros. I want to do collaborative work for my own project and being a part of this collective has been valuable to explore the approach I want to take. TikTok has been a welcome distraction, entertainment, and research object all in one and I love having chats with people that are interested in it as well.
